Love Your Neighbor

Love Your Neighbor

Love Your Neighbor

Pastor Don Barnes

Luke 10:25-29 (NIV) “On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

I. Three Possible Attitudes

A. Avoidance (Priest)

Luke 10:30-31 (NCV) “Jesus answered, “As a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, some robbers attacked him. They tore off his clothes, beat him, and left him lying there, almost dead. It happened that a priest was going down that road. When he saw the man, he walked by on the other side.”

B. Selfishness (Levite)

Luke 10:32 (NCV) “Next, a Levite came there, and after he went over and looked at the man, he walked by on the other side of the road.”

C. Golden Rule (Samaritan)

Luke 10:33 (NCV) “Then a Samaritan traveling down the road came to where the hurt man was. When he saw the man, he felt very sorry for him.”

Matthew 7:12 (NIV) “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

II. How Do I Love My Neighbors?

A. Look sensitively

Luke 10:33 (NCV) “Then a Samaritan traveling down the road came to where the hurt man was. When he saw the man, he felt very sorry for him.”

B. Listen compassionately

Luke 10:33 (ESV) “But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.”

C. Act spontaneously

Luke 10:34a (NCV) “The Samaritan went to him, poured olive oil and wine on his wounds, and bandaged them.”

D. Give Generously

Luke 10:34b-37 (NCV) “Then he put the hurt man on his own donkey and took him to an inn where he cared for him. The next day, the Samaritan brought out two coins, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of this man. If you spend more money on him, I will pay it back to you when I come again.’” Then Jesus said, “Which one of these three men do you think was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by the robbers?” The expert on the law answered, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Then go and do what he did.”

Proverbs 28:27 (NIV) “Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.”

2 Corinthians 9:7-8 (NIV) “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
